Help Programmer is telling me I must convert .ASP to PHP

cooperspick » 周六 5月 14, 2011 2:34 pm

Run a website that gets decent traffic but it needs to be redesigned for optimal conversions. Now I have a programmer telling me I should convert to.asp instead of .net since it's going to be cheaper for a server and easier to edit. What do you think about converting from .asp to php and is it even neccessarry? when I can go to .net

It is a bit of a religious question. You can't really say what is best.

I don't think you should convert just to convert. ASP is still full full functional and lot of successful sites still run ASP. If it ain't broken - don't fix it! . But if you are planning a new version of the site for other reasons, you should consider moving to either PHP or .NET.

If you have any experience with either .NET or PHP yourself, I would say that you should choose that. Otherwise, I would personally recommend PHP. I don't think it will be cheaper, but it is probably easier to find a good PHP developer to help you than a good .NET developer. You could consider "outsource" it on sites like http://www.vworker.com/ or http://www.freelance.com/ where you will some very good developers at a good price.

Good luck,

Thanks so much. I think granted its not too expensive I am going to make the switch. What is a reasonable price to pay for a transfer?

It is very difficult to say. It depends on several things: a) how many pages you have, b) how much scripting are used, c) are the coding commented, etc. You need to have somebody look at it and make an offer.

You might be able to use most of the ASP coding in .NET with only a relative few changes. But then it would be same coding just with a new extension - which would be a waste of money.

Again, I don't think you should make the switch unless you want to make a new version of the site.

Just my two cents :)

The site has over 1,000 pages but most of those are articles that I have added.

Also what do u mean by new site. We are going to re-design how people purchase packages and how data is displayed, look, and feel...

hope this gives you enough data to answer my question...one more question though my live odds feed will this and the other sports odds still be compatible with php or do I have to find a new feed?

Yes, a "re-design how people purchase packages and how data is displayed, look, and feel..." is what I would call a new version of the site. And then it could make sense to switch tp PHP or .NET.

If it is a dynamic site where most of the content is saved in databases - my quess is that it is - it would make the switch easier. Otherwise, if you have over 1000 static pages it would be bigger job.

My guess would be that it would cost you somewhere between $5K - $25K. But it is only a guess! It depends on a lot of things.

I don't know how your live feed are made. But you would probably be able to make the same in PHP.

Another thing you should be aware of is, that if you change to PHP or .NET the file extensions would also change (by default to .php or .aspx) which means that your URLs will be different from now and you will loose backlinks and pagerank in Google etc. If you make a "htaccess 301 redirect" (try to google it) it will minimise the damages.

That was actually one of my biggest worries losing rankings over this as well. I will have to look into that more in depth. Thanks so much for all of the help. I will let you know what happens.
